Orchard Happenings and Updates
  • Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 11! …It’s also our frost date. We like to begin planting warm season crops with the significantly lower risk of frost and freezing after May 11.

  • We are hosting a Flower Bulb Giveaway (while supplies last!) at the Weaver Creek Park community gardens beginning at 10am this Saturday. It’s a perfect day to come out to the orchard and garden with us, receive your free flower bulb or flower seeds, and hang out in the beautiful space.

  • May 17, we will have a short workshop about the importance of legumes and demonstrate 3 Sisters Companion planting.

  • May 24, Memorial Day Weekend, Jovial will not be providing a workshop on this Saturday in observance of the holiday.

  • …Coming later in June, we will be hosting a late season plant sale! We aim for a late season sale to help gardeners replenish plants damaged by late spring hail storms. Stay tuned for more updates as we get further into the growing season.
Gardening Heads up!
The irrigation system is set up, repairs have been made, and the hydrants around the park are active. We’ve got more leaks to patch, but the system is stabilizing!

Hardening off Seedlings
A Crucial Step for Colorado Gardeners

🌱Hardening off is the process of gradually acclimating plants to outdoor conditions. It might sound like a simple “move them outside and hope for the best” kind of deal, but it’s a little more nuanced, especially in Colorado’s unpredictable spring climate.. 🌤️

Our Jovial Approach
We use both a grow-garage and a greenhouse to raise our seedlings. The greenhouse helps expose plants to wide temperature ranges and bright natural sunlight, while our grow-garage uses fans to mimic natural airflow. That airflow encourages stronger stems and better root development—essential for outdoor success. On top of this, whenever possible, we like to give our plants a few days outside before we plant. We’re hoping to upgrade our fan system next year for even more consistent air movement!

Preventing Sunscald
(AKA plant Sunburn)

When you gradually expose your seedlings to sunlight during hardening off, you’re giving them time to ramp up this internal sunblock production.

Just like humans, plants can get sunburned especially when moved suddenly from shade to full sun. When this happens, leaves and fruit will turn white and leathery just like in the photos above. By slowly exposing your plants to the intense light provided by the sun, you give them a chance to SPF up and protect themselves.

How You Can Harden Off Seedlings at Home

Start about 7–10 days before transplanting.

  • Day one, place seedlings outdoors in a shaded, wind-protected area for 2–3 hours. Bring them back in before nightfall.

  • Increase their outdoor exposure each day, gradually introducing them to more sunlight and wind. By day five or six, they can spend most of the day outside in full sun. Water well, as plants may dry out more quickly during this transition.

  • Watch the weather! Avoid hardening off during storms, freeze warnings, or extreme heat. Colorado can surprise us in spring—stay flexible.

  • And that’s it! Then your plants be acclimatized and ready to go in your garden!
