Hey all! We have had a busy past week at the orchard with compost drop-offs (free to use for all gardeners renting a plot!), wasp nest management, augering holes in clogged weed barrier, and mulching fruit trees. Below, this newsletter features a snippet from Paige, our school garden Liaison, about some of her summer garden programming.
Tomorrow, Saturday August 3rd, We could definitely use your help laying some stones in the butterfly garden. Noah will be leading a workshop starting at 10am to identify common pests, and then after that we will be gardening and working on the butterfly garden.
Reminder! We are hosting a Fall Festival at Weaver Creek Park on October 14 from 12pm-4pm. We will have activities and events for people of all ages! Last year was a blast with train rides, bounce houses, vendors, food, and brews.Â
We could use community support and volunteers on the day of the event. If you might be able to help out, please sign up here: https://forms.gle/GE6sDomuVCh27dVp6
If you are interested or would like to learn more about becoming and vendor or sponsors, sign up here: https://forms.gle/bCQMQ7XeSbuMYFG27
A little extra information about goings on at the orchard.
The compost was provided by Colorado Composting, it is free to use for gardeners who are renting raised bed plots this year. If you did not rent a plot and would like to pick some up, please email [email protected].
Noah has been out and about this week in full bee suit regalia to tackle some huge wasp nests in the raised beds at the orchard. We will be making multiple passes to take care of them, but rest assured multiple nests have been removed this week.Â
We have noticed water pooling on the sides of the raised bed gardens. This is at least in part due to water not draining properly at the base of the garden beds. We are working on perforating the clogged weed fabric which is at the bottom of each raised bed. There is a lot going on at the orchard and I have much more information coming next week! Stay tuned!

Tomato Relish
A fun way to use a bounty of extra tomatoes as we enter the big fruit production season of the year.
Â
Oh what a fun summer it’s been in the gardens this season. The kiddos have been getting their hands in the dirt and loving it. We have been studying the importance and life cycle of pollinators. We also raised our own painted lady butterflies!Â
This project really tested the kids patience. They raised them from tiny caterpillars and watched the metamorphosis into adult butterflies. Those painted ladies were a special bunch out of the 750 different species in the U.S. Fly butterflies, fly!  🦋
Harvest, harvest, harvest! Cole season veggies are almost out and warm season veggies are coming in! That being said, the kids now understand the difference of fruits/vegetables and how and when to harvest. Our largest yields have been, greens, radish, beets, and herbs! Mm garden salad anyone??Â
