(From Last Week! — Succession Plant to maximize your harvest!)

If you want to pack your garden for a bountiful late season harvest after the first frost comes around, now is the perfect time!

Succession Planting – why?
Succession planting is a process used to maximize vegetable and garden production throughout the year. It’s a strategy to routinely seed your garden to maintain a steady set of crops and avoiding leaving empty spaces.

The technique is especially important in Colorado where the spring and fall are fairly cool and can stunt tender warm season vegetables which need daytime temperatures above 60°F and prefer temperatures above 70°F.

By planting cold hardy plants in the early spring, and again now for a fall harvest, we are able to eek out a little more production and a bountiful final fall harvest from our gardens for when temperatures starts to dip.

We are in August, the prime season for vegetable production, but October and fall temperatures are right around the corner! It is the perfect time to plant cold hardy vegetables that mature quickly for a fall harvest.

Additional Information from trusted education based resources.

Succession Planting – what to do
We use our spring and fall frost dates to help determine when we should expect a frosty nip in our gardens. For fall, we expect to have frost visit the region around October 11th. Using information about ‘days until harvest’ on seed packets, we can plant with this information in mind.

Now is a great time to plant: Swiss Chard, (cold hardy, avg. 60 days until harvest), Broccoli (65 days), Spinach (40 days), carrots (70 days), beets (60 days), and even peas can mature in time with an average of 65 days until harvest.

The best way to succession plant is to have multiple “harvest seasons” in mind. Many crops have a limited lifespan/harvest. Plan what vegetable to grow as a replacement based on temperature needs and days until harvest. Remember, there are cold season and warm season crops.

It’s also a great idea to plant in rounds – for quick growing, single harvest crops (such as spinach and radishes), planting in small batches at spaced out intervals (approx. every two weeks) allows continuous harvesting. This prevents an overload of any single crop.
