What is the FRC?

The EPA is partnering with organizations and businesses to prevent and reduce wasted food. Food Recovery Challenge (FRC) participants save money, help communities, and protect the environment by purchasing less, donating extra food, and composting. FRC is part of EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Program, which seeks to reduce the environmental impact of materials through their entire life cycle, including how they are extracted, manufactured, distributed, used, reused, recycled, and disposed.

Organizations are Encouraged to Join the FRC
Any business or organization can join as a participant or endorser.

  • Participants reduce wasted food through prevention, donation, composting and anaerobic digestion.
  • Endorsers promote sustainable food management by educating organizations about the environmental consequences of wasted food and recruiting participants

Help Feed 250 Food Insecure Families In Colorado

Nearly 1 in 5 households with children reported food hardship and more than 25% of working families in Colorado do not have enough food to meet their basic needs (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). By transforming 40 lawns into organic gardens, we will grow enough fresh produce to feed 250 Colorado families. Using gardens as a classroom, participants learn sustainability, environmental awareness, healthy food practices, and how to combat obesity and other health issues associated with food hardships.
