Orchard Happenings and Updates
๐ŸฃIn April!๐Ÿ
Hi all! Come out tomorrow, Saturday April 4th, (kick off at 10am!) for a festive spring celebration and garden scavenger hunt! We will have a variety of interactive stations set up where people can build vermicomposting bins, take a story stroll, paint Kindness rocks, create seed bombs, plant egg shell faces, and we will even have Face Painting!๐Ÿฆ

Special Shout Out to Total Orthodontics Last weekend!
A group of about 40 volunteers from Total Orthodontics and the community came outย weekend to help us remove layers of week cloth from two vineyards, and install new grape trellises! Weed fabric breaks down overtime and can have a negative impact on soil health (read more). It truly takes many hands to support this space and we are so encouraged by y’alls support. Thank you!

Soil Health
Fertilizing, Amendments, and Testing

Soil Management
Colorado soil is generally heavy clay, something which most vegetables do not grow well in. You can add organic matter (like compost) to help improve your soil; generally, we like to aim for 3-6% organic matter in vegetable gardens.

What?
Most packages of fertilizer display three numbers on the front the package (like 3-2-5, or 10-10-10); these refer to the amount of N, P, K (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium) in the mix. These are the three Macro Nutrients; the things that plants use most. Secondary nutrients areย Ca, Mg, S (Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur).

Generally, we try to aim for a Nitrogen contentย around 40ppm (parts per million) in vegetable gardens.

With fertilizer, it is very easy to provide plantsย with too much of a good thing.ย This is where a reliable soil test from a labย comes in handy.

When?
After a plant has had some time for its roots to adjust to the soil, you can start adding fertilizer without running the risk of stressing your plants by throwing them off balance. For peppers, you can add additional Nitrogen after the first flush is set; for Squash, Cucumbers, and Melon, add some Nitrogen when they begin to vine.ย

Soil Test, for what?
It is important to know the composition of your soil, before adding any amendments or fertilizers. If your soil already has a ton of Potassium or Nitrogen, heaping on a ‘balanced’ 10-10-10 fertilizer will lead to your garden becoming anything but healthy. In this case, too much of a good thing can stunt plant growth.

We had a set of garden plots in the North community garden space which were incredibly high in salts; to the point where the salt contentย prohibited healthy plant growth! This was likely due to many applications of manure over years which led to a build up of salts.

A soil test allows you to accurately planย and reach optimum amounts of nutrients in your soil and preventing the purchase on unnecessary fertilizers and amendments.

I have been quite pleased with two labs in particular for testing soil in Colorado and have used both numerous times for professional needs. They have sensitive equipment and provide recommendations based on your soil results.

To get the most out of your test, there are some important techniques highlighted in this article which you should adhere to:ย https://agsci.colostate.edu/divi-soiltestinglab/wp-content/uploads/sites/140/2023/02/Soil-Sampling-Instructions.pdf.
